The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen, and what they inscribe, (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward. (3) And indeed you possess an exemplary character. (4) So you will see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) Wherefore obey not thou the beliers. (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) And obey not everyone who swears much, and is considered worthless, (10) back-biting, gossiping, (11) One who excessively forbids the good, transgressor, sinner. (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) or that because he may possess wealth and children. (14) That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old. (15) We will soon singe his pig-nose. (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) "Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares,]" (24) And they went forth early, determined upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray," (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) They said: woe unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant. (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. (33)
