The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Noon. By the Pen and that (the angels) write, (1) You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. (2) There is surely reward unending for you, (3) And indeed you possess an exemplary character. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) #NAME? (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10) the backbiter who goes about slandering, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) We will brand him on the nose. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying), (23) Let there not enter upon you today any needy man. (24) They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost; (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the world to come, is assuredly greater, did they but know. (33)
