The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Noon. By the Pen and that (the angels) write, (1) Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (2) And most surely you shall have a reward never to be cut off. (3) And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4) You shall see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10) backbiter, going about with slander, (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactor (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) or that because he may possess wealth and children. (14) When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore. (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) We have tried them as we tried the owners of a certain orchard, who vowed to harvest all its fruits the next morning, (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) and in the morning it was if the garden had been reaped. (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) And in the morning they went, having the power to prevent. (25) But as soon as they beheld [the garden and could not recognize] it, they exclaimed, "Surely we have lost our way!" (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the torment if only they knew that the torment in the life hereafter will certainly be greater. (33)
