The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) There is surely reward unending for you, (3) You have attained a high moral standard. (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]. (6) Verily your Lord knows those who have gone astray from His path, and He knows those who are guided on the way. (7) So obey thou not those who cry lies. (8) They wish that in some way you may yield, so they too might soften their stand. (9) And obey not everyone who swears much, and is considered worthless, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) We have tried them as we tried the owners of a certain orchard, who vowed to harvest all its fruits the next morning, (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) No needy man shall enter it to-day against you. (24) They left early in the morning bent on this purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: (26) nay, rather we have been robbed!' (27) The best among them said: "Did I not tell you: why do you not say: Insha' Allah (If Allah will)." (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Some of them started to blame others. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
