The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen, and all that they write! (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) You have attained a high moral standard. (4) So you will see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily your Lord knows those who have gone astray from His path, and He knows those who are guided on the way. (7) Do not yield to those who reject the Truth. (8) they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) the crude of low character (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the men of old!" (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) We have tested them in the same way as we tested the dwellers of the garden (in Yemen) when they swore to pluck all the fruits of the garden in the morning, (17) Without making exception. (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord visited it, while they were sleeping, (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) Then they started blaming one another, (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) Maybe our Lord will give us a better orchard in its place; to our Lord do we penitently turn.” (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
