The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen, and what they inscribe, (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) And verily thou art of a high and noble disposition. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) Then do not obey the deniers. (8) They want you to make concessions to them and then they will reciprocate. (9) And do not yield to any contemptible swearer, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) We shall brand him upon the muzzle! (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) Without saying: Insha' Allah (If Allah will). (18) Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on. (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) And they cried out one unto another in the morning, (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) "Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day." (24) And they went out early, determined in their resolve. (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) [But] it may be that our Sustainer will grant us something better instead: for, verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn with hope!" (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
