The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith), (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) Who is distracted. (6) Your Lord knows best who has fallen by the wayside, and who has remained on the true path. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) Fain would they that thou shouldst be pliant, so that they will be pliant. (9) And do not yield to any contemptible swearer, (10) backbiter, going about with slander, (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) or that because he may possess wealth and children. (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) [As for such sinners,] behold, We [but] try them as We tried the owners of a certain garden who vowed that they would surely harvest its fruit on the morrow, (17) And made no exception (for the Will of Allah); (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So off they went, whispering to one another: (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) They were resolved to repel the beggars. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Most surely we have gone astray (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)? (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) Maybe, our Lord will give us instead one better than it; surely to our Lord do we make our humble petition. (32) Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the Everlasting Life is much greater, if they but knew. (33)
