The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nuun* by oath of the pen and by oath of what is written by it. (Alphabet of the Arabic language; Allah and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By your Lord's Grace, you are not afflicted with madness, (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) For you are truly of a sublime character. (4) You will see and they will also see (5) Who is distracted. (6) Verily your Lord knows those who have gone astray from His path, and He knows those who are guided on the way. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) They would like you to relent to them so that they could also relent towards you. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) [or to] the slanderer that goes about with defaming tales, (11) the hinderer of good, the transgressor, the sinful; (12) Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13) Is it because he is possessed of worldly goods and children (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) Anon We shall brand him on snout. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) and they added not the saving words. (18) Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on. (19) So it became as black, barren land. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) 'Come out to your tillage if you want to reap' (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) "Let no needy person come to you within it today." (24) And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Most surely we have gone astray (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) They said: "Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong!" (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
