The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Noon. I swear by the pen and what the angels write, (1) You (O Muhammad SAW) are not, by the Grace of your Lord, a madman. (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) Surely, you (Prophet Muhammad) are of a great morality. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) Who is distracted. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) So (O Muhammad SAW) obey not the deniers [(of Islamic Monotheism those who belie the Verses of Allah), the Oneness of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad SAW), etc.] (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders, (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) Foul mouthed, and in addition to all this, of improper lineage. (13) (who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons, (14) When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore. (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) [As for such sinners,] behold, We [but] try them as We tried the owners of a certain garden who vowed that they would surely harvest its fruit on the morrow, (17) And made no exception (for the Will of Allah); (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) So in the morning it became as if harvested. (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) That, “Go to your fields at early morn, if you want to harvest.” (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) When they saw the garden, they said, "Surely we have lost our way. (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then they turned, one against another, in blaming. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) “Hopefully, our Lord will give us a better replacement than this we now incline towards our Lord.” (32) Such is the punishment (in this life), but truly, the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they but knew. (33)
