The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) Wherefore obey not thou the beliers. (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Furthermore, defer not to the contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) Hinderer of the good, trespasser; sinner. (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) (who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons, (14) When you recite Our revelations to him, he says: "These are fables of long ago." (15) We shall brand him on the nose. (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) And made no exception (for the Will of Allah); (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) So it became as black, barren land. (20) So they called out to each other at the break of dawn, (21) "If you want to gather the fruits, let us go early to the plantation." (22) Thus they launched forth, whispering unto one another, (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: (26) No. In fact we have been deprived of it." (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They cried out: “Glory be to our Lord! Certainly we were sinners.” (29) Then they approached one another, blaming each other. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
