The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. (2) There is surely reward unending for you, (3) And verily thou art of a high and noble disposition. (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) #NAME? (6) Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path and who is rightly guided. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) Simply because he possesses wealth and children. (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) We have tested them in the same way as we tested the dwellers of the garden (in Yemen) when they swore to pluck all the fruits of the garden in the morning, (17) And they made not the exception. (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) and in the morning it was if the garden had been reaped. (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying), (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) And they went forth early, determined upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) Nay, but we are desolate! (27) The best of them said: Did I not say to you, Why do you not glorify (Allah)? (28) They cried out: “Glory be to our Lord! Certainly we were sinners.” (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said: "Woe to us! Verily, we were Taghun (transgressors and disobedient, etc.) (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
