The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted standard of character. (4) You shall see and they will see (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Your Lord knows best who has fallen by the wayside, and who has remained on the true path. (7) Therefore do not listen to the deniers. (8) Fain would they that thou shouldst be pliant, so that they will be pliant. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) Greedy therewithal, intrusive. (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) We have put them [i.e., the Makkans] to test even as We put to test the owners of the orchard when they vowed that they would gather the fruit of their orchard in the morning, (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord visited it, while they were sleeping, (19) So in the morning it became as if harvested. (20) Then they cried out unto each other in the morning. (21) "Go early to your farms, if you want to pluck the fruits". (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) "Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day." (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) When they saw the garden, they said, "Surely we have lost our way. (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the Everlasting Life is much greater, if they but knew. (33)
