The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. [These letters (Nun, etc.) are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. By the pen and what the (angels) write (in the Records of men). (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward. (3) You have attained a high moral standard. (4) So you will see and they will see (5) Who is distracted. (6) Surely your Lord best knows him who errs from His way, and He best knows the followers of the right course. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) Greedy therewithal, intrusive. (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) We shall brand him upon the muzzle! (16) Surely We will try them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would certainly cut off the produce in the morning, (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) They were resolved to repel the beggars. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) (No, we are not lost.) In fact, we have been deprived of everything". (27) The best of them said: Did I not say to you, Why do you not glorify (Allah)? (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
