The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Noon. I swear by the pen and what the angels write, (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) You will see and they will also see (5) Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) Do not yield to those who reject the Truth. (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) [or to] the slanderer that goes about with defaming tales, (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, sinful, (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) or that because he may possess wealth and children. (14) and whenever Our verses are rehearsed to him, he says: “These are fairy- tales of times gone by.” (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) We have tried them as we tried the owners of a certain orchard, who vowed to harvest all its fruits the next morning, (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) A calamity from your Lord befell the orchard as they slept. (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) "Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits." (22) Thus they launched forth, whispering unto one another, (23) "Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares,]" (24) And they went out betimes determined in purpose. (25) Then when they beheld it, they said: verily we have strayed. (26) Aye! it is we who are deprived! (27) The most moderate of them said: said I not unto you, wherefore hallow him ye not! (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) Then they began to heap reproaches on each other. (30) Saying: "Alas the woe, we were iniquitous. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
