The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Surely thy Lord knows very well those who have gone astray from His way, and He knows very well those who are guided. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) Fain would they that thou shouldst be pliant, so that they will be pliant. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders, (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) It is because he is possessed of wealth and children (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning (17) and they added not the saving words. (18) A visitor from your Lord circled around the garden during the night while they were asleep (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) So they called out to each other at the break of dawn, (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they departed, whispering together, (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!" (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said: "Woe to us! Verily, we were Taghun (transgressors and disobedient, etc.) (31) Maybe our Lord will give us a better orchard in its place; to our Lord do we penitently turn.” (32) Such is Our chastisement; and the punishment of the Hereafter will be greater, if only they knew! (33)
