The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) You (O Muhammad SAW) are not, by the Grace of your Lord, a madman. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) For you are truly of a sublime character. (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Your Lord knows best who has fallen by the wayside, and who has remained on the true path. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) Neither obey thou each feeble oath-monger, (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) or that because he may possess wealth and children. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) We shall brand him on the nose. (16) We have tried you as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed to gather the fruits in the morning (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) "Go early to your tilth if you want to harvest the fruit!" (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) The most moderate of them said: said I not unto you, wherefore hallow him ye not! (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) So they came towards each other, blaming. (30) They said, "Woe to us. We have been arrogant. (31) May be our Lord will give us a better orchard in its stead; we turn to Him." (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
