The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. By the pen and by what you write, (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) Most surely, you will have a never ending reward. (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) Anon thou wilt see and they will see. (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily, your Lord knows better, who (among men) has gone astray from His Path, and He knows better those who are guided. (7) So obey thou not those who cry lies. (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Do not heed a contemptible swearer, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) (He was so) because he had wealth and children. (14) That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old. (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) And they called out to each other in the morning, (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) Saying: No poor man shall enter it today upon you. (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But when they saw it, they said, 'Surely we are gone astray; (26) nay, rather we have been robbed!' (27) Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) Then they began to heap reproaches on each other. (30) They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
