The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) By the grace of your Lord you are not mad. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) And most surely you conform (yourself) to sublime morality. (4) You shall see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) Do not yield to those who reject the Truth. (8) They wish that in some way you may yield, so they too might soften their stand. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) Greedy therewithal, intrusive. (13) Is it because he is possessed of worldly goods and children (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) We shall brand him upon the muzzle! (16) We have tested them in the same way as we tested the dwellers of the garden (in Yemen) when they swore to pluck all the fruits of the garden in the morning, (17) Without making exception. (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) And in the morning it was as if plucked. (20) Now when they rose at early morn, they called unto one another, (21) "Go early to your farms, if you want to pluck the fruits". (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) "Let no needy person come to you within it today." (24) And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. (25) But as soon as they beheld [the garden and could not recognize] it, they exclaimed, "Surely we have lost our way!" (26) No. In fact we have been deprived of it." (27) A reasonable one among them said, "Did I not tell you that you should glorify God?" (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
