The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Noon. By the Pen and that (the angels) write, (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) So you will see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) Then do not obey the deniers. (8) they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant. (9) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10) A defamer, spreader abroad of slander. (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) so that by the morrow it became barren and bleak. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) 'Come out to your tillage if you want to reap' (22) So they departed, whispering together, (23) "Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares,]" (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost; (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The best of them said: Did I not say to you, Why do you not glorify (Allah)? (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) They said 'Woe to us, truly we were insolent' (31) “Hopefully, our Lord will give us a better replacement than this we now incline towards our Lord.” (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
