The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) By your Lord's Grace, you are not afflicted with madness, (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted standard of character. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Verily your Lord knows those who have gone astray from His path, and He knows those who are guided on the way. (7) Do not yield to those who reject the Truth. (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) And obey thou not every mean swearer, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) (Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin, (12) Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore. (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) And they made not the exception. (18) Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on. (19) and in the morning it was if the garden had been reaped. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap. (22) And so they departed, whispering to one another: (23) No needy man shall enter it to-day against you. (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) nay, rather we have been robbed!' (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) They said, 'Glory be to God, our Lord; truly, we were evildoers.' (29) Then they turned, one against another, in blaming. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such is the torment. And the torment of the Hereafter is far greater; if they but knew. (33)
