The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith), (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4) So you will see, and they will realise, (5) which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily, your Lord knows better, who (among men) has gone astray from His Path, and He knows better those who are guided. (7) Do not yield to those who reject the Truth. (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) Furthermore, defer not to the contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) Ignoble, besides all that, base-born; (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) We shall brand him upon the muzzle! (16) Verily, We have tried them as We tried the people of the garden, when they swore to pluck the fruits of the (garden) in the morning, (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) Then they cried out unto each other in the morning. (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) So they went off, while whispering to one another. (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But when they saw it, they said: Most surely we have gone astray (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) The best among them said: "Did I not tell you: why do you not say: Insha' Allah (If Allah will)." (28) They said, "Glory be to God, our Lord. We have surely done wrong." (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such is the torment. And the torment of the Hereafter is far greater; if they but knew. (33)
