The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) By the grace of your Lord you are not mad. (2) and surely yours shall be a never-ending reward, (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Surely your Lord best knows him who errs from His way, and He best knows the followers of the right course. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) they would like thee to be soft [with them,] so that they might be soft [with thee]. (9) And obey not everyone who swears much, and is considered worthless, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) Surely We will try them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would certainly cut off the produce in the morning, (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap. (22) So off they went, whispering to one another: (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) And they went out betimes determined in purpose. (25) Then when they beheld it, they said: verily we have strayed. (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) A reasonable one among them said, "Did I not tell you that you should glorify God?" (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. (31) May be our Lord will give us a better orchard in its stead; we turn to Him." (32) Such is the torment. And the torment of the Hereafter is far greater; if they but knew. (33)
