The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Noon. By the Pen and that (the angels) write, (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) There is surely reward unending for you, (3) And most surely you conform (yourself) to sublime morality. (4) So you shall see, and they (too) shall see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) Therefore do not listen to the deniers. (8) they would like thee to be soft [with them,] so that they might be soft [with thee]. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) and whenever Our verses are rehearsed to him, he says: “These are fairy- tales of times gone by.” (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) "Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares,]" (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The best among them said: "Did I not tell you: why do you not say: Insha' Allah (If Allah will)." (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) Such is the torment if only they knew that the torment in the life hereafter will certainly be greater. (33)
