The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) You are not demented by the grace of your Lord. (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) #NAME? (6) Verily, thy Sustainer alone is fully aware as to who has strayed from His path, Just as He alone is fully aware of those who have found the right way. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) Foul mouthed, and in addition to all this, of improper lineage. (13) Because he is owner of riches and children. (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) And they made not the exception. (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) Let there not enter upon you today any needy man. (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) [In the end] they said: "Oh, woe unto us! Verily, we did behave outrageously! (31) “Hopefully, our Lord will give us a better replacement than this we now incline towards our Lord.” (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
