The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. (3) surely thou art upon a mighty morality. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) The excessively insulting one, spreader of spite. (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) And they did not say, “If Allah wills”. (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) So by the morning it seemed as though picked clean. (20) In the morning they called out to one another, (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So they went off, while whispering to one another. (23) Let there not enter upon you today any needy man. (24) They left early in the morning bent on this purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) Nay, but we are desolate! (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then they approached one another, blaming each other. (30) They said, "Woe to us. We have been arrogant. (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. (33)
