The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nun. [These letters (Nun, etc.) are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. By the pen and what the (angels) write (in the Records of men). (1) you are not, because of the favor of your Lord, mad. (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) And indeed you possess an exemplary character. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Surely thy Lord knows very well those who have gone astray from His way, and He knows very well those who are guided. (7) Do not give in to the deniers of truth. (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactor (12) the crude of low character (13) just because he has wealth and sons, (14) When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the men of old!" (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) and they added not the saving words. (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) At daybreak they called out to one another: (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) Thus they launched forth, whispering unto one another, (23) "Let no beggar come to the garden". (24) They were resolved to repel the beggars. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!" (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) So they came towards each other, blaming. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) "It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this: for we do turn to Him (in repentance)!" (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
