The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. (2) You will certainly receive a never-ending reward. (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) And so they departed, whispering to one another: (23) Let there not enter upon you today any needy man. (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) "Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!" (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) And they came blaming one another. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) Such is the punishment (in this life), but truly, the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they but knew. (33)
