The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Noon. I swear by the pen and what the angels write, (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) You will certainly receive a never-ending reward. (3) And indeed you possess an exemplary character. (4) Soon you will see, as will they, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Verily, thy Sustainer alone is fully aware as to who has strayed from His path, Just as He alone is fully aware of those who have found the right way. (7) Wherefore obey not thou the beliers. (8) They want you to make concessions to them and then they will reciprocate. (9) And obey not everyone who swears much, and is considered worthless, (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) moreover ignoble, (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore. (15) We shall brand him on his nose. (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) A visitor from your Lord circled around the garden during the night while they were asleep (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' (28) They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then they turned, one against another, in reproach. (30) They said: woe unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant. (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. (33)
