The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) surely thou art upon a mighty morality. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) which of you has been afflicted by insanity. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) So do not comply with those who deny: (8) they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) back-biting, gossiping, (11) or to one who places obstacles in the way of good being done or to the wicked transgressor, (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) We have tried them as we tried the owners of a certain orchard, who vowed to harvest all its fruits the next morning, (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) and in the morning it was if the garden had been reaped. (20) As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So they went off, while whispering to one another. (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) They left early in the morning bent on this purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray," (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) Then they turned to each other reproaching. (30) They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. (31) Maybe our Lord will give us better than this. We turn to our Lord in supplication." (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
