The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen, and all that they write! (1) By the grace of your Lord you are not mad. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) and you are certainly on the most exalted standard of moral excellence. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) And yield not to any mean swearer (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) or to one who places obstacles in the way of good being done or to the wicked transgressor, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) And made no exception (for the Will of Allah); (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) Saying: No poor man shall enter it today upon you. (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) "Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!" (27) The best among them said: "Did I not tell you: why do you not say: Insha' Allah (If Allah will)." (28) They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
