The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) There is surely reward unending for you, (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) So you shall see, and they (too) shall see, (5) Who is distracted. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) Do not give in to the deniers of truth. (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) the crude of low character (13) Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14) That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old. (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) so that by the morrow it became barren and bleak. (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) And so they departed, whispering to one another: (23) No needy man shall enter it to-day against you. (24) And they went out betimes determined in purpose. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!" (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." (29) Then they started blaming one another, (30) They said, "Woe to us. We have been arrogant. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. (33)
