The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Noon. By the Pen and that (the angels) write, (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) Indeed, there is an unfailing wage for you. (3) And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted standard of character. (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path and who is rightly guided. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) Furthermore, defer not to the contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) (who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons, (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples." (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) And they made not the exception. (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) And in the morning it was as if plucked. (20) And they called out to each other in the morning, (21) "If you want to gather the fruits, let us go early to the plantation." (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) When they saw the garden, they said, "Surely we have lost our way. (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." (29) Then they started blaming one another, (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
