The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by what you write, (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) And most surely you shall have a reward never to be cut off. (3) And verily thou art of a high and noble disposition. (4) So you will soon see, and they too will see, (5) which of you has been afflicted by insanity. (6) Your Lord knows best who has fallen by the wayside, and who has remained on the true path. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) And obey thou not every mean swearer, (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) and whenever Our verses are rehearsed to him, he says: “These are fairy- tales of times gone by.” (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) Without making exception. (18) Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on. (19) So in the morning it became as if harvested. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) So they went off, while whispering to one another. (23) Let there not enter upon you today any needy man. (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost; (26) No. In fact we have been deprived of it." (27) The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)? (28) They said: "Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong!" (29) And they came blaming one another. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
