The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) You (O Muhammad SAW) are not, by the Grace of your Lord, a madman. (2) And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) which of you has been afflicted by insanity. (6) Surely your Lord best knows him who errs from His way, and He best knows the followers of the right course. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) they wish you would compromise, then, they would compromise. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) (Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin, (12) Foul mouthed, and in addition to all this, of improper lineage. (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) A calamity from your Lord befell the orchard as they slept. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) They were resolved to repel the beggars. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error! (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said: "Glory to our Lord! Verily we have been doing wrong!" (29) Then they approached one another, blaming each other. (30) They said: "Alas for us! We have indeed transgressed! (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
