The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ NUN. I CALL to witness the pen and what they inscribe, (1) You are not demented by the grace of your Lord. (2) And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward. (3) Surely, you (Prophet Muhammad) are of a great morality. (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) [or to] the slanderer that goes about with defaming tales, (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) Gross, and therewithal ignoble. (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: (26) No, rather, we have been prevented' (27) Said the most right-minded among them: "Did I not tell you, 'Will you not extol God's limitless glory?'" (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
