The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Your Lord knows best who has fallen by the wayside, and who has remained on the true path. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They would like you to relent to them so that they could also relent towards you. (9) And do not yield to any contemptible swearer, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) We shall brand him upon the muzzle! (16) [As for such sinners,] behold, We [but] try them as We tried the owners of a certain garden who vowed that they would surely harvest its fruit on the morrow, (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on. (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) "Go early to your tilth if you want to harvest the fruit!" (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) No needy man shall enter it to-day against you. (24) And they went forth early, determined upon their purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost; (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) Then they approached one another, blaming each other. (30) They said: "Woe to us! Verily, we were Taghun (transgressors and disobedient, etc.) (31) Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord". (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
