The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) surely thou art upon a mighty morality. (4) So you will see, and they will realise, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) they wish you would compromise, then, they would compromise. (9) And yield not to any mean swearer (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) And they did not say, “If Allah wills”. (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) so that by the morrow it became barren and bleak. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) So off they went, whispering to one another: (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. (33)
