The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen, and all that they write! (1) Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (2) And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. (3) And verily thou art of a high and noble disposition. (4) Soon you will see, as will they, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) Do not heed a contemptible swearer, (10) The excessively insulting one, spreader of spite. (11) Hinderer of the good, trespasser; sinner. (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on. (19) and the garden was turned into a barren desert. (20) Then they cried out unto each other in the morning. (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- (23) Let there not enter upon you today any needy man. (24) And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: (26) Nay, but we are desolate! (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
