The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Noon. I swear by the pen and what the angels write, (1) By your Lord's Grace, you are not afflicted with madness, (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) And indeed you possess an exemplary character. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) which of you has been afflicted by insanity. (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant. (9) Do not heed a contemptible swearer, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) [or] one who is cruel, by greed possessed, and in addition to all this, utterly useless [to his fellow-men]. (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the men of old!" (15) We will soon singe his pig-nose. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) But made no reservation, ("If it be Allah's Will"). (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) and the garden was turned into a barren desert. (20) As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- (21) "Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits." (22) So they departed, whispering together, (23) No needy man shall enter it to-day against you. (24) They left early in the morning bent on this purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error! (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The best among them said: "Did I not tell you: why do you not say: Insha' Allah (If Allah will)." (28) They answered: "Limitless in His glory is our Sustainer! Verily, we were doing wrong!" (29) Then they approached one another, blaming each other. (30) They said, 'Woe, alas for us! Truly, we were insolent. (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
