The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) You (O Muhammad SAW) are not, by the Grace of your Lord, a madman. (2) And verily, for you (O Muhammad SAW) will be an endless reward. (3) surely thou art upon a mighty morality. (4) So you will see and they will see (5) Who is distracted. (6) Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who walk aright. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) they would like thee to be soft [with them,] so that they might be soft [with thee]. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) Hinderer of the good, trespasser; sinner. (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) Because he possesses wealth and (numerous) sons. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) [As for such sinners,] behold, We [but] try them as We tried the owners of a certain garden who vowed that they would surely harvest its fruit on the morrow, (17) Without saying: Insha' Allah (If Allah will). (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) So the (garden) became, by the morning, like a dark and desolate spot, (whose fruit had been gathered). (20) And they cried out one unto another in the morning, (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) Thus they launched forth, whispering unto one another, (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But when they saw it, they said: Lo! we are in error! (26) No. In fact we have been deprived of it." (27) The best of them said: Did I not say to you, Why do you not glorify (Allah)? (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then they turned, one against another, in blaming. (30) They said 'Woe to us, truly we were insolent' (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
