The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) So thou shalt see, and they will see, (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) Do not give in to the deniers of truth. (8) they would like thee to be soft [with them,] so that they might be soft [with thee]. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) the backbiter who goes about slandering, (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) It is because he is possessed of wealth and children (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) without adding to their swearing, (Allah willing, InshaAllah). (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) So in the morning it became as if harvested. (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) "If you want to gather the fruits, let us go early to the plantation." (22) So they went, while they consulted together secretly, (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said 'Woe to us, truly we were insolent' (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such is the torment. And the torment of the Hereafter is far greater; if they but knew. (33)
