The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by what you write, (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And verily, thine shall be a reward neverending (3) For you are truly of a sublime character. (4) You will see and they will also see (5) which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Surely your Lord best knows him who errs from His way, and He best knows the followers of the right course. (7) Do not yield to those who reject the Truth. (8) They wish that in some way you may yield, so they too might soften their stand. (9) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (10) [or to] the slanderer that goes about with defaming tales, (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) moreover ignoble, (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- (23) "Let no beggar come to the garden". (24) They went betimes, strong in (this) purpose. (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray," (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) [In the end] they said: "Oh, woe unto us! Verily, we did behave outrageously! (31) “Hopefully, our Lord will give us a better replacement than this we now incline towards our Lord.” (32) Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. (33)
