The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith), (1) thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) which of you is a prey to madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) So do not comply with those who deny: (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) And obey not everyone who swears much, and is considered worthless, (10) back-biting, gossiping, (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) (He was so) because he had wealth and children. (14) when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are just ancient fables." (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they sware that they would surely reap it in the morning. (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) So by the morning it seemed as though picked clean. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying), (23) "Let no beggar come to the garden". (24) And in the morning they went, having the power to prevent. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)? (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
