The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. (3) and you are certainly on the most exalted standard of moral excellence. (4) You shall see and they will see (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) So hearken not to those who deny (the Truth). (8) they wish you would compromise, then, they would compromise. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) the fault-finder who goes around slandering, (11) hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, (12) moreover ignoble, (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When you recite Our revelations to him, he says: "These are fables of long ago." (15) We shall brand him on the muzzle. (16) [As for such sinners,] behold, We [but] try them as We tried the owners of a certain garden who vowed that they would surely harvest its fruit on the morrow, (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) so that by the morrow it became barren and bleak. (20) And they cried out one unto another in the morning, (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) So off they went, whispering to one another: (23) "Be sure to stop any poor person from entering the orchard today." (24) And they went out early, determined in their resolve. (25) But as soon as they beheld the orchard, (they cried out): “We have certainly lost the way; (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) One who was temperate among them, said: "Did I not say: 'Why don't you priase God?'" (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then they turned, one against another, in blaming. (30) They said: Alas for us! In truth we were outrageous. (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such was the punishment. And verily the punishment of the Hereafter is greater if they did but know. (33)
