The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And most surely you shall have a reward never to be cut off. (3) And most surely you conform (yourself) to sublime morality. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) Which of you is the demented. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) They would like you to relent to them so that they could also relent towards you. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) [or] the withholder of good, [or] the sinful aggressor, (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) (He was so) because he had wealth and children. (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) So by the morning it seemed as though picked clean. (20) So they called out to each other at the break of dawn, (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray," (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) A reasonable one among them said, "Did I not tell you that you should glorify God?" (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then they turned, one against another, in blaming. (30) They said, "Woe to us. We have been arrogant. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than it in exchange. To our Lord we humbly turn' (32) Such is the torment. And the torment of the Hereafter is far greater; if they but knew. (33)
