The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Noon. By the Pen and that (the angels) write, (1) Thou art not, for thy Lord's favour unto thee, a madman. (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) And verily thou art of a high and noble disposition. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) Their desire is that thou shouldst be pliant: so would they be pliant. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) The excessively insulting one, spreader of spite. (11) (Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin, (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) Because he is owner of riches and children. (14) when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are just ancient fables." (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) We have tested them in the same way as we tested the dwellers of the garden (in Yemen) when they swore to pluck all the fruits of the garden in the morning, (17) Without saying: Insha' Allah (If Allah will). (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) Then they cried out unto each other in the morning. (21) "Go early to your farms, if you want to pluck the fruits". (22) And so they departed, whispering to one another: (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) [In the end] they said: "Oh, woe unto us! Verily, we did behave outrageously! (31) Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord". (32) SUCH is the suffering [with which We try some people in this world]; but greater by far will be the suffering [which sinners shall have to bear] in the life to come - if they but knew it! (33)
