The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) Indeed, there is an unfailing wage for you. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) So you will soon see, and they too will see, (5) Who is distracted. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) Furthermore, defer not to the contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) One who excessively forbids the good, transgressor, sinner. (12) Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- (13) Simply because he possesses wealth and children. (14) When Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are ancient legends". (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on. (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) 'Come out to your tillage if you want to reap' (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) And they went out early, determined in their resolve. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Then they began to heap reproaches on each other. (30) They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors. (31) [But] it may be that our Sustainer will grant us something better instead: for, verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn with hope!" (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
