The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and that which they write (therewith), (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) and surely yours shall be a never-ending reward, (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) So you will see, and they will realise, (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Verily, thy Sustainer alone is fully aware as to who has strayed from His path, Just as He alone is fully aware of those who have found the right way. (7) So do not comply with those who deny: (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) (Habitually) hindering (all) good, transgressing beyond bounds, deep in sin, (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) (who so acts) simply because he has wealth and sons, (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) We will brand him upon the snout. (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) So they called out to each other at the break of dawn, (21) "Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye would gather the fruits." (22) So they departed, whispering together, (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) Aye! it is we who are deprived! (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) Then they began to reproach one another. (30) They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the torment if only they knew that the torment in the life hereafter will certainly be greater. (33)
