The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) By your Lord's Grace, you are not afflicted with madness, (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) So you shall see, and they (too) shall see, (5) Who is distracted. (6) Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path and who is rightly guided. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, sinful, (12) Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- (13) Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) We shall brand him on the muzzle. (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) and they added not the saving words. (18) Then there passed by on the (garden) something (fire) from your Lord at night and burnt it while they were asleep. (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) And in the morning they went, having the power to prevent. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!" (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
