The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Noon. I swear by the pen and what the angels write, (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) And most surely you shall have a reward never to be cut off. (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) Do not yield to those who reject the Truth. (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Nor ever listen to any excessive oath maker, ignoble person. (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) the hinderer of good, the transgressor, the sinful; (12) Ignoble, besides all that, base-born; (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When Our communications are recited to him, he says: Stories of those of yore. (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) without adding to their swearing, (Allah willing, InshaAllah). (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) Now when they rose at early morn, they called unto one another, (21) Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits." (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) [and then,] "Nay, but we have been rendered destitute!" (27) The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)? (28) They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers. (29) and then they turned upon one another with mutual reproaches. (30) They said 'Woe to us, truly we were insolent' (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
