The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) You will certainly receive a never-ending reward. (3) And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted standard of character. (4) You will see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily, thy Sustainer alone is fully aware as to who has strayed from His path, Just as He alone is fully aware of those who have found the right way. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) The excessively insulting one, spreader of spite. (11) One who excessively forbids the good, transgressor, sinner. (12) the crude of low character (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says: 'They are but fairytales of the ancients' (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) So it became as black, barren land. (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) 'Come out to your tillage if you want to reap' (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) They were resolved to repel the beggars. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) "Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!" (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) So they came towards each other, blaming. (30) They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors. (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
