The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord, mad or possessed. (2) There is surely reward unending for you, (3) And indeed, you are of a great moral character. (4) You will see and they will also see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) Wherefore obey not thou the beliers. (8) They wish that you should be pliant so they (too) would be pliant. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) back-biting, gossiping, (11) One who excessively forbids the good, transgressor, sinner. (12) Ignoble, besides all that, base-born; (13) Because he is owner of riches and children. (14) That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old. (15) We shall brand him over the nose! (16) [As for such sinners,] behold, We [but] try them as We tried the owners of a certain garden who vowed that they would surely harvest its fruit on the morrow, (17) And made no exception (for the Will of Allah); (18) A calamity from your Lord befell the orchard as they slept. (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) They then called out to each other at daybreak. (21) Saying: go out betimes to your tilth if ye would reap. (22) Thus they launched forth, whispering unto one another, (23) "Let no beggar come to the garden". (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) Said the most moderate of them, 'Did I not say to you, "Why do you not give glory?"' (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said: "Woe to us! Verily, we were Taghun (transgressors and disobedient, etc.) (31) Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord". (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
