The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ NUN. I CALL to witness the pen and what they inscribe, (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) You will certainly receive a never-ending reward. (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) They only want that you should relent, so that they may come to terms. (9) Do not heed a contemptible swearer, (10) the fault-finder who goes around slandering, (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender. (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When you recite Our revelations to him, he says: "These are fables of long ago." (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Lo! We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that they would pluck its fruit next morning, (17) without making any allowance (for the will of Allah). (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) So they departed, whispering together, (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) And in the morning they went, having the power to prevent. (25) Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
