The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) For you are truly of a sublime character. (4) So you shall see, and they (too) shall see, (5) which of you has been afflicted by insanity. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) Detracter, spreader abroad of slanders, (11) obstructing virtues, a sinful transgressor, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are just ancient fables." (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) We have tried you as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed to gather the fruits in the morning (17) Without making exception. (18) A calamity from your Lord befell the orchard as they slept. (19) Then in the morning it became as though it had been reaped. (20) Now when they rose at early morn, they called unto one another, (21) Saying: Run unto your field if ye would pluck (the fruit). (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) And they went forth early, determined upon their purpose. (25) But as soon as they beheld [the garden and could not recognize] it, they exclaimed, "Surely we have lost our way!" (26) No. In fact we have been deprived of it." (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) "Glory to our Lord," they said; we were really in the wrong." (29) Then they turned, one against another, in blaming. (30) They said: woe unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant. (31) We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord (wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the Hereafter)." (32) Such is Our chastisement; and the punishment of the Hereafter will be greater, if only they knew! (33)
