The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) Soon you will see, as will they, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily thy Lord! He is the best Knower of him who strayeth from His path, and He is the best Knower of the guided one. (7) Do not give in to the deniers of truth. (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) And yield not to any mean swearer (10) A defamer, spreader abroad of slander. (11) One who excessively forbids the good, transgressor, sinner. (12) the crude of low character (13) Because he is owner of riches and children. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they sware that they would surely reap it in the morning. (17) and they added not the saving words. (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) And they called one another at morning, (21) That, “Go to your fields at early morn, if you want to harvest.” (22) So they went off, whispering to one another, (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]?' " (28) They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) Said they: O woe to us! surely we were inordinate: (31) Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord". (32) Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. (33)
