The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Noon. By the Pen and that (the angels) write, (1) You are not insane, by the munificence of your Lord. (2) And indeed for you is an unlimited reward. (3) And indeed you possess an exemplary character. (4) So very soon, you will see and they too will realise (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed your Lord well knows those who have strayed from His path, and He well knows those who are upon guidance. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant. (9) And obey not thou any swearer ignominous. (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) Violent (and cruel),- with all that, base-born,- (13) Because he is a possessor of wealth and children, (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) We shall brand him upon the muzzle! (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) without adding to their swearing, (Allah willing, InshaAllah). (18) Then there encompassed it a visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. (19) So by the morning it seemed as though picked clean. (20) Now when they rose at early morn, they called unto one another, (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) And so they departed, whispering to one another: (23) "Indeed, no needy person shall enter it today [and come] upon you [unawares,]" (24) And they went out early, determined in their resolve. (25) Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” (26) "Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!" (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) They said, "Glory be to God, our Lord. We have surely done wrong." (29) So they came towards each other, blaming. (30) They said: "Woe to us! Verily, we were Taghun (transgressors and disobedient, etc.) (31) Maybe our Lord will give us better than this. We turn to our Lord in supplication." (32) Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. (33)
