The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ NUN. I CALL to witness the pen and what they inscribe, (1) You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman. (2) There is surely reward unending for you, (3) And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted standard of character. (4) So you shall see, and they (too) shall see, (5) Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]. (6) Verily, your Lord knows better, who (among men) has gone astray from His Path, and He knows better those who are guided. (7) Hence, defer not to [the likes and dislikes of] those who give the lie to the truth: (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) Hinderer of the good, trespasser; sinner. (12) Crude, and above all, mean and infamous, (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) When Our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' (15) We shall brand him upon the muzzle! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) Without making exception. (18) Then a visitation from thy Lord came upon it while they slept (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) "Go early to your farms, if you want to pluck the fruits". (22) So they departed, talking in low voices: (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) The best among them said: "Did I not tell you: why do you not say: Insha' Allah (If Allah will)." (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) Some of them started to blame others. (30) They said: “Woe to us! We had indeed transgressed. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such was their punishment, [in this life]. But the punishment of the life to come is much more severe, if only they knew it! (33)
