The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on an exalted standard of character. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) they would like thee to be soft [with them,] so that they might be soft [with thee]. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) who is ignoble and besides all that, base-born; (13) just because he has wealth and sons, (14) that, whenever Our messages are conveyed to him, such a one says, "Fables of ancient times"? (15) We will brand him on the nose. (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) without adding ("if God wills"). (18) whereupon a visitation for thy Sustainer came upon that [garden] while they were asleep, (19) So the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins). (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- (23) “Make sure that no needy person enters your garden this day.” (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) Aye! it is we who are deprived! (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said: Glory be to our Lord, surely we were unjust. (29) Then they started blaming one another, (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) Maybe, our Lord will give us instead one better than it; surely to our Lord do we make our humble petition. (32) Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the Everlasting Life is much greater, if they but knew. (33)
