The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) Thou art not, by thy Sustainer's grace, a madman! (2) Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: (3) Surely, you (Prophet Muhammad) are of a great morality. (4) Anon thou wilt see and they will see. (5) which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Verily it is thy Lord that knoweth best, which (among men) hath strayed from His Path: and He knoweth best those who receive (true) Guidance. (7) So do not comply with those who deny: (8) They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you. (9) Furthermore, defer not to the contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) [or to] the slanderer that goes about with defaming tales, (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) the crude of low character (13) Because he* has some wealth and sons. (Walid bin Mugaira, who cursed the Holy Prophet.) (14) when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are just ancient fables." (15) Soon We will brand him on the nose. (16) Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) Then there came on the (garden) a visitation from thy Lord, (which swept away) all around, while they were asleep. (19) So in the morning it became as if harvested. (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) "Go early to your farms, if you want to pluck the fruits". (22) So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying), (23) No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today. (24) They were resolved to repel the beggars. (25) But when they saw it they said: 'We have surely gone astray. (26) No, rather, we have been prevented' (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said, "All glory belongs to God. We have certainly been unjust". (29) And they advanced one upon another, blaming each other. (30) [In the end] they said: "Oh, woe unto us! Verily, we did behave outrageously! (31) It may be that our Lord will give us better than this in place thereof. Lo! we beseech our Lord. (32) Such is the punishment; and indeed the punishment of the Hereafter is the greatest, if only they knew! (33)
