The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen, and all that they write! (1) Thou art not, through the grace of thy Lord, mad. (2) There is surely reward unending for you, (3) For you are verily born of sublime nature. (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Your Lord knows best who has fallen by the wayside, and who has remained on the true path. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) Who would have had thee compromise, that they may compromise. (9) And do not obey every mean swearer, (10) the fault-finder who goes around slandering, (11) Who hinders men from (doing) good, the transgressor, the iniquitous, (12) the crude of low character (13) (He was so) because he had wealth and children. (14) That, when Our revelations are recited unto him, he saith: Mere fables of the men of old. (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) We have tried you as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed to gather the fruits in the morning (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) Now when they rose at early morn, they called unto one another, (21) "Go early to your tilth if you want to harvest the fruit!" (22) Thus they launched forth, whispering unto one another, (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They cried out: “Glory be to our Lord! Certainly we were sinners.” (29) Then they turned to each other reproaching. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) Maybe our Lord will give us a better orchard in its place; to our Lord do we penitently turn.” (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
