The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) You will certainly receive a never-ending reward. (3) And most surely you conform (yourself) to sublime morality. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His path and who is rightly guided. (7) So do not comply with those who deny: (8) they would wish you to be pliant so that they too may be pliant. (9) Do not yield to one persistent in swearing, (10) Or backbiter, calumniator, slanderer, (11) or to one who places obstacles in the way of good being done or to the wicked transgressor, (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) Because he is owner of riches and children. (14) when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, "These are just ancient fables." (15) [For this] We shall brand him with indelible disgrace! (16) We have indeed tested them the way We had tested the owners of the garden when they swore that they would reap its harvest the next morning. (17) But did not add: "If God may please." (18) A visitor from your Lord circled around the garden during the night while they were asleep (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke, (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) They were resolved to repel the beggars. (25) Then when they beheld it, they said: verily we have strayed. (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) 'Exaltations to Allah, our Lord' they said, 'We were truly harmdoers' (29) Then they turned to each other reproaching. (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) Maybe our Lord will give us better than this. We turn to our Lord in supplication." (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
