The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. By the pen and what the scribes write. (1) Thou art not, for thy Lord's favour unto thee, a madman. (2) Indeed, there is an unfailing wage for you. (3) And thou (standest) on an exalted standard of character. (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) which of you has been afflicted by insanity. (6) Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (7) Therefor obey not thou the rejecters (8) They want you to make concessions to them and then they will reciprocate. (9) And obey thou not every mean swearer, (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefactor (12) Cruel, after all that base-born (of illegitimate birth), (13) (He was so) because he had wealth and children. (14) When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “These are stories of earlier people.” (15) Soon shall We brand (the beast) on the snout! (16) Verily We! We have proved them even as We proved the fellows of a garden when they sware that they would surely reap it in the morning. (17) and made no allowance [for the will of God]: (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) At daybreak they called to each other: (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) They all left, whispering to one another, (23) [Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person." (24) And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). (25) But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost; (26) “In fact, we are unfortunate.” (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other. (30) They said, "Woe to us. We have been arrogant. (31) It may be that our Lord will give us in exchange a better than it; to our Lord we humbly turn.' (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
