The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. By the pen and by that which they inscribe. (1) (Muhammad), you are not insane, thanks to the bounty of your Lord. (2) And lo! thine verily will be a reward unfailing. (3) You have attained a high moral standard. (4) You shall see and they will see (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Indeed, your Lord knows very well those who strayed from His Path, and those who are guided. (7) Do not, then, yield to those who reject the Truth, decrying it as false; (8) they wish you would compromise, then, they would compromise. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) back-biting, gossiping, (11) hinderer of good, guilty aggressor, coarse-grained, (12) the crude of low character (13) Simply because he possesses wealth and children. (14) and whenever Our verses are rehearsed to him, he says: “These are fairy- tales of times gone by.” (15) Soon shall We brand him on his snout. (16) Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning (17) And made no exception (for the Will of Allah); (18) Then a calamity from your Lord fell upon it, but they remained fast asleep. (19) And it became as though reaped. (20) (Then) in the morning they called out to one another, saying: (21) “Hurry to your orchard if you would gather its fruit.” (22) So they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: (23) “No destitute person shall enter it today.” (24) And they left at early morn, assuming they were in control of their purpose. (25) Then when they saw it, they said, “We have indeed strayed.” (26) No, rather, we have been prevented' (27) (Whereupon) the best among them said: 'Did I not say to you to exalt (Allah)' (28) They said: "Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)." (29) Then some of them drew near unto others, self-reproaching. (30) They said: woe unto us! verily we! we have been arrogant. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
