The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) thou art not, by the blessing of thy Lord, a man possessed. (2) Surely thou shalt have a wage unfailing; (3) And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature. (4) and [one day] thou shalt see, and they [who now deride thee] shall see, (5) which of you is the demented. (6) Your Lord knows best who has fallen by the wayside, and who has remained on the true path. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) They wish that thou shouldst compromise, then they would compromise. (9) And yield not to any mean swearer (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful, (12) Greedy therewithal, intrusive. (13) because he has wealth and sons. (14) When Our revelations are rehearsed unto him, he saith: fables of the ancients. (15) We shall brand him on his nose. (16) We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden who had sworn that in the morning they would reap it, (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) Wherefore an encircling visitation visited it even as they slept on. (19) and the garden was turned into a barren desert. (20) Then they cried out unto each other in the morning. (21) [Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit." (22) So they went off, while whispering to one another. (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) They went forth early, believing that they had the power (to gather the fruit). (25) But when they saw it, they said, 'Surely we are gone astray; (26) Nay! we are made to suffer privation. (27) The best among them said: Said I not unto you: Why glorify ye not (Allah)? (28) They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers." (29) Then they turned, one against another, in reproach. (30) They said 'Woe to us, truly we were insolent' (31) Perhaps our Lord will replace it with a better garden. We turn in repentance to our Lord". (32) Such is the chastisement, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is greater, did they but know! (33)
