The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, (1) you are not, because of the favor of your Lord, mad. (2) And verily, thine shall be a reward neverending (3) And verily thou art of a high and noble disposition. (4) And thou wilt see and they will see (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) They would like you to relent to them so that they could also relent towards you. (9) Do not heed a contemptible swearer, (10) or to any defamer or one who spreads slander, (11) Forbidder of good, outstepping the limits, sinful, (12) Greedy therewithal, intrusive. (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) We shall mark him upon his nose! (16) Now We have tried them, even as We tried the owners of the garden when they swore they would pluck in the morning (17) But did not add: "If God may please." (18) A visitor from your Lord circled around the garden during the night while they were asleep (19) and so by morning the orchard lay as though it had been fully harvested. (20) So they called out to each other at the break of dawn, (21) 'Come forth betimes upon your tillage, if you would pluck!' (22) So they went off speaking to each other in a low voice. (23) Let there not enter upon you today any needy man. (24) They set out early in the morning, thinking they had the power to prevent. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) rather, we are utterly ruined.” (27) The best among them said: “Did I not say to you: why do you not give glory to (your Lord)?” (28) They said, "All glory belongs to God. We have certainly been unjust". (29) Then they turned, one against another, in reproach. (30) They said, "Alas for us, our behaviour was beyond the pale. (31) Belike our Lord may exchange for us better garden than this; verily we are unto our Lord beseechers. (32) Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew. (33)
