The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nun. By the pen and by what you write, (1) By the grace of your Lord, you are not a mad man. (2) Indeed, there is an unfailing wage for you. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) So you will see, and they will realise, (5) which of you has been afflicted by insanity. (6) Surely your Lord knows well those who have strayed from His Way just as He knows well those who are on the Right Way. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) they would like thee to be soft [with them,] so that they might be soft [with thee]. (9) Neither obey thou each feeble oath-monger, (10) Defamer, going about with slander (11) or to one who places obstacles in the way of good being done or to the wicked transgressor, (12) Gross, and therewithal ignoble. (13) It is because he is possessed of wealth and children (14) When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the men of old!" (15) We will soon singe his pig-nose. (16) We have tried you as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed to gather the fruits in the morning (17) And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor). (18) So an envoy from your Lord completed his round upon the garden, whilst they were sleeping. (19) and the garden was turned into a barren desert. (20) Then they cried out unto each other in the morning. (21) That, “Go to your fields at early morn, if you want to harvest.” (22) So they set out, while lowering their voices, (23) "Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day." (24) They left early in the morning bent on this purpose. (25) Then when they beheld it, they said: verily we have strayed. (26) Rather, we have been deprived." (27) Said one of them, more just (than the rest): "Did I not say to you, 'Why not glorify (Allah)?'" (28) They said: hallowed be Our Lord! verily we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then they began to heap reproaches on each other. (30) They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors. (31) Maybe our Lord will give us better than this. We turn to our Lord in supplication." (32) Such is the Punishment (in this life); but greater is the Punishment in the Hereafter,- if only they knew! (33)
