The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nun. CONSIDER the pen, and all that they write [therewith]! (1) you are not, because of the favor of your Lord, mad. (2) And verily thine shall be a hire unending. (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) Anon thou wilt see and they will see. (5) which of you was bereft of reason. (6) Verily, thy Sustainer alone is fully aware as to who has strayed from His path, Just as He alone is fully aware of those who have found the right way. (7) So do not yield to the rejecters. (8) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]. (9) Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (10) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) ill-mannered, and moraly corrupt (13) It is because he is possessed of wealth and children (14) When to him are rehearsed Our Signs, "Tales of the ancients", he cries! (15) We shall brand him on the muzzle. (16) We have put them [i.e., the Makkans] to test even as We put to test the owners of the orchard when they vowed that they would gather the fruit of their orchard in the morning, (17) And they made not the exception. (18) So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep. (19) and in the morning it was as if it were a garden plucked. (20) So they called out to each other at the break of dawn, (21) saying, "Be quick to reach your orchard, if you want to gather all your fruits." (22) So they went off speaking to each other in a low voice. (23) 'No needy person shall set foot in it today' (24) and early they went, strongly bent upon their purpose. (25) When they saw (and did not recognise it) they said: "Surely we have lost the way. (26) Nay, but we are desolate! (27) The best among them said, “Did I not tell you, ‘Why do you not proclaim His purity?’” (28) They said: Glorified be our Lord! Lo! we have been wrong-doers. (29) Then they turned, one against another, in reproach. (30) They said 'Woe to us, truly we were insolent' (31) Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous." (32) Such is the chastisement; and the chastisement of the Hereafter is assuredly even greater, if only they knew. (33)
