The Pen (Al-Qalam)
52 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Embryo (Al-Alaq) before Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ NUN. I CALL to witness the pen and what they inscribe, (1) you are not, because of the favor of your Lord, mad. (2) and surely yours shall be a never-ending reward, (3) for, behold, thou keepest indeed to a sublime way of life; (4) Soon wilt thou see, and they will see, (5) Which of you is afflicted with madness. (6) Indeed your Lord well knows those who have strayed from His path, and He well knows those who are upon guidance. (7) Therefore, do not obey those who belie, (8) They wish that in some way you may yield, so they too might soften their stand. (9) Do not yield to any contemptible swearer of oaths, (10) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, (11) those who hinder good, the guilty aggressor, (12) the coarse-grained, and above all mean and ignoble; (13) Because he possesses wealth and sons. (14) When Our Verses (of the Quran) are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the men of old!" (15) Anon We shall brand him on snout. (16) Verily We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they resolved to gather the fruits of the (garden) in the morning. (17) without saying, "If it be God's will." (18) Then, a visitation from your Lord came down upon it while they slept, (19) And by morning it lay as if it had already been harvested, a barren land. (20) In the morning they called to one another, (21) Saying: Go early to your tilth if you would cut (the produce). (22) So they went off speaking to each other in a low voice. (23) 'No needy man shall enter it today against your will.' (24) And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. (25) But when they saw it, they said, "We must have lost our way. (26) Indeed, we are utterly ruined!" (27) The more upright of the two said, "Did I not bid you to glorify God?" (28) They said, “Purity is to our Lord we have indeed been unjust.” (29) Then they started blaming one another, (30) They said, “Woe to us we were indeed rebellious.” (31) “Hopefully, our Lord will give us a better replacement than this we now incline towards our Lord.” (32) Such was their punishment. But the punishment of the Everlasting Life is much greater, if they but knew. (33)
