The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped (1) your comrade is not astray, neither errs, (2) He does not speak out of his own desires. (3) that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired (4) He was taught by one Mighty in Power, (5) [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, (6) standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, (7) Then he drew nigh and came down (8) Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. (9) And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. (10) The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. (11) Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? (12) And indeed he (Muhammad SAW) saw him [Jibrael (Gabriel)] at a second descent (i.e. another time). (13) Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], (14) Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. (15) When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes (16) [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: (17) Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. (18) Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, (19) And another, the third (goddess), Manat? (20) What! unto you the males and unto Him the females? (21) That, then, is an unjust division. (22) These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. (23) Can ever man get what he desires? (24) Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. (25)
