The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped (1) This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, (2) He does not speak out of his own desires. (3) Indeed it is not except a Revelation which is revealed, (4) He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, (5) One vigorous; and he grew clear to view (6) And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. (7) Then he drew nigh and came down (8) he was but two bows' length or even nearer, (9) then revealed to his servant that he revealed. (10) His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. (11) Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? (12) And assuredly he saw him at another descent. (13) At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - (14) nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, (15) When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. (16) [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: (17) Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. (18) (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, (19) And subsequently the third, the Manat? (20) Is the male for you and for Him the female? (21) This is an unfair distinction! (22) They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. (23) Can the human being have whatever he wishes? (24) Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). (25)
