The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the Star when it goes down,- (1) Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; (2) Nor does he speak out of desire. (3) This is naught but a revelation revealed, (4) One of mighty powers hath taught it him. (5) Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. (6) While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. (7) then came down close (8) until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. (9) So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. (10) His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. (11) Will you then argue with him about what he saw? (12) And certainly he saw him descend a second time: (13) Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. (14) close to the Garden of Refuge. (15) When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; (16) Neither did sight falter nor exceed the bounds. (17) truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. (18) Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). (19) And Manat, the third, the last? (20) Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? (21) Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! (22) These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. (23) Or shall man have what he wishes? (24) But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. (25)
