The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Star when it goes down,- (1) Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, (2) nor does he speak out of desire. (3) It is not but a revelation revealed, (4) Taught to him by one intense in strength - (5) one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, (6) While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. (7) Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, (8) Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, (9) And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. (10) His heart did not falsify what he perceived. (11) So will you dispute with him over what he saw? (12) And verily he saw him yet another time (13) By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, (14) Near it is the Garden of Refuge - (15) when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. (16) The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. (17) He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. (18) (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, (19) and the third one, Manat? -- (20) Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? (21) That is indeed an unjust division. (22) These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. (23) Or is there for man whatever he wishes? (24) To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. (25)
