The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. (1) Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. (2) Neither does he speak of his own will. (3) It is naught but revelation that is revealed, (4) taught him by one terrible in power, (5) and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; (6) While he was in the highest part of the horizon: (7) Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. (8) until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. (9) Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. (10) The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. (11) what, will you dispute with him what he sees? (12) For indeed he saw him at a second descent, (13) At the farthest lote-tree; (14) Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. (15) when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. (16) His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. (17) He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. (18) Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, (19) and about the third deity, al-Manat? (20) Are yours the males and His the females? (21) Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! (22) They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance. (23) Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, (24) To God belong the End and the Beginning. (25)
