The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the Star when it setteth, (1) Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; (2) Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. (3) It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. (4) The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, (5) one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, (6) appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, (7) He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. (8) until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. (9) And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. (10) His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. (11) Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? (12) And certainly he saw him descend a second time: (13) Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: (14) near unto the garden of promise. (15) When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! (16) [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: (17) Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. (18) Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza (19) And Manat, the third, the last? (20) Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? (21) That indeed were an unfair division! (22) These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. (23) Or shall man have whatever he fancies? (24) But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. (25)
