The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. (1) That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, (2) Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. (3) It is but a revelation revealed. (4) taught him by one terrible in power, (5) [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, (6) While he was on the uppermost horizon. (7) Then he approached and came closer, (8) So he was the measure of two bows or closer still. (9) And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. (10) The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: (11) what, will you dispute with him what he sees? (12) And certainly he saw him descend a second time: (13) By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, (14) near which is Paradise. (15) When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. (16) The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. (17) Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. (18) Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, (19) and about the third deity, al-Manat? (20) Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? (21) That indeed is a division unfair! (22) They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. (23) Or is there for man whatever he wishes? (24) Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. (25)
