The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the star when it goes down. (1) Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. (2) And he speaketh not of his own desire. (3) It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. (4) He was taught by one Mighty in Power, (5) very strong; he stood poised, (6) being on the higher horizon. (7) then came down close (8) two bows' length away, or nearer, (9) He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. (10) His heart did not lie of what he saw. (11) Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? (12) Indeed, he saw him another time (13) By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, (14) close to the Garden of Refuge. (15) (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. (16) (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! (17) Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. (18) So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? (19) And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? (20) What! for you the males and for Him the females! (21) That indeed is a division most unfair! (22) They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. (23) Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? (24) And to God belongs the First and the Last. (25)
