The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it setteth. (1) Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; (2) Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. (3) This is only revelation communicated, (4) taught him by one terrible in power, (5) by the great mighty one (Gabriel), (6) While he was in the highest part of the horizon: (7) Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. (8) And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; (9) When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. (10) His heart did not lie of what he saw. (11) Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? (12) And indeed, he saw him a second time (13) At the farthest lote-tree; (14) near which is Paradise. (15) When that which covers covered the lote-tree; (16) [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: (17) Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. (18) So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? (19) And Manat, the third, the last? (20) Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? (21) This indeed is an unjust division! (22) They are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down no authority touching them. They follow only surmise, and what the souls desire; and yet guidance has come to them from their Lord. (23) Can the human being have whatever he wishes? (24) To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. (25)
