The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped (1) This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, (2) Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. (3) It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. (4) taught him by one terrible in power, (5) One vigorous; and he grew clear to view (6) the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. (7) Then he drew near and drew closer (8) Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. (9) So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. (10) The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. (11) What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? (12) Indeed he saw him a second time, (13) By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, (14) close to the Garden of Refuge. (15) when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered; (16) (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! (17) He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. (18) Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, (19) And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? (20) What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? (21) That indeed is a division most unfair! (22) These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. (23) Or shall man have what he wishes? (24) But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. (25)
